The whole world is digitally connected. What would take months to accomplish in the Middle Ages now takes only a few hours. When you study international relations, you examine issues in the fields of politics, economics and law, and how they are interrelated. You learn how things were done in the past and what influence this continues to have on contemporary issues. And you look at the relations between countries and examine where the challenges lie.
Are you interested in history, for example, and want to know how international relations came about? Then you can study war and peace and analyse political decisions as well as social issues. If your interest primarily lies in the legal aspects of international relations, you can delve into themes such as security, globalisation of markets, migration and sustainability.
When you study international relations at VU Amsterdam, you look at contemporary global issues from a broad interdisciplinary perspective. You try to find solutions to many problems like refugee issues, global warming, sustainability and food security issues. You also learn how legislation and regulations can be applied. And you attend lectures with other international students and look for possible answers with each other. Together, you contribute to a better world.
