Learn how power works

Analyse the causes and effects of power

What are the effect of the Russian-Ukrainian war on the EU? Do international tech companies steer our political debate? Is the USA still the leading world power, or is it ceding its position to China?

As a Political Scientist, you want to understand the world and make your own contribution. You closely follow shifting power relationships in Europe and the rest of the world. Moreover, you are interested in their underlying causes, such as cultural differences and technological developments.

At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam you will be educated thoroughly in Political Science’s various subdisciplines. This gives you a good start to then choose your own directions. Of course, you will also be well trained in the skills that you need as a Political Scientist.

The programme is small-scale; the teachers are engaged and there is a close-knit, highly diverse student community. In class, this creates a variety of viewpoints, experiences, and cultures. You will also reflect on your own assumptions and convictions.

And important part of the program is the training of debating and presentation skills that are important for Political Scientists.

Are you particularly interested in Dutch politics? Then take the Dutch language track Politicologie: Nationale Politiek en Bestuur.

The start date of this programme is September 1st.

International applications

Want to know if you can be admitted?

First year

You will begin with a rigorous introduction to the core concepts and theories of comparative politics, international relations, public administration, and political theory – the four subdisciplines of Political Science. You will visit a political institution and practice your communication skills so that you can support your arguments. You will do a Model United Nations exercise about a topical case study, such as the conflict in the South China Sea. And you will also learn to write strong political papers (with and without AI).

Subjects

Second year

You will dive more deeply into issues of international politics. You will study the role of the EU in the world, global political economy, and international security. In this year, you will also improve your Political Science research skills, learning (for instance) how to make a good survey and how to analyse big data.  In the second semester, you will study ‘hot topics’ in the Social Science for Society courses, taking these courses with students from other social science disciplines such as Sociology and Communication Science. In lectures and tutorials, you will seek solutions to the challenges facing society today.

Subjects

Third year

In the first semester, you have a semester of free space: you can shape your own curriculum. You might study abroad or do an internship (e.g., at an embassy or NGO). Or you can do a minor. You can choose a minor within the social sciences or in another faculty, such as Economics or Law. Thus, you can give your study programme its own flavour. In the second semester you will write a Bachelor thesis. This allows you to develop your own expertise!
