Create smart technology with social impact

Challenging problems, practical solutions: at Creative Technology (CreaTe) you learn to translate the needs of the end user into a product. Knowledge from computer science and electrical engineering are central to this bachelor's degree.

You convert this knowledge into smart, practical solutions that make life more pleasant or even completely different. You learn to reflect on the impact that technology has on society and receive lessons in modern labs from top scientists who share the latest scientific developments with you.

Studying CreaTe: Amsterdam and Enschede, what about that?
The VU CreaTe students have their own classroom at the VU, where they attend most lectures and working groups. We use our VU Makerspace for some of the practicals. In the Makerspace, you can also further develop your own technical skills under the guidance of a dedicated technician.

Our students also regularly travel to the UT Enschede, mainly to follow practicals that are optimally utilised in the Twente labs. During these days, students from UT and VU work together a lot. We try to schedule consecutive lecture days in Enschede to make your stay as efficient as possible. For example, in the first months, until the end of December, students will visit the campus in Enschede four times this academic year, for a total of seven days. Looking at the year schedule you will spend around 20 nights in Twente. During these visits you can spend the night on the UT campus in the log cabins. Most CreaTe students see these visits as a positive part of their studies, both in terms of content and for fun.

In short: you will spend most of your time studying in Amsterdam, but you will receive your diploma from the University of Twente.

Curious about the Creative Technology program?
Below you will find the course overview of the 3 years, and also take a look at:

Year 1

From the first year, you will work on real-life issues. You'll work together in multidisciplinary teams, searching and analyzing until you have found the core of an issue, and then developing solutions that make a difference. You will create technical solutions that are well thought through, look good and are socially relevant.

Courses

  1. Foundations of CreaTe: an introduction to Creative Technology as a discipline and as a subject
  2. Smart Environments: various techniques from different disciplines that are needed to invent, design and realize a (prototype of) a smart environment
  3. Living & Working Tomorrow: learn to imagine, realize, present and evaluate ideas
  4. Art, Impact & Technology: during the project you'll design and build an interactive installation

You can find the complete course overview for this year at the University of Twente site

Year 2

In the second year you will deepen your knowledge and skills. You will kick-off with a elective in either Humane by Design, Smart technology or Interactive Media. Next, you will focus on themes such as Interaction Design, Hands-on AI, and processing, visualising and physiscalising data.

Humane by Design is offered at VU Amsterdam and Smart Technology and Interactive Media are offered at the UT. All three electives are open for all Creative Technology students.

Courses

5: Electives:

  • Humane by Design | Amsterdam
  • Smart Technology | Twente
  • Interactive Media  | Twente

6: Interaction Design: factors to consider in the interaction between people and technical systems

7: Hands-on AI: Understanding AI and Machine Learning and being able to use it in your designs

8: Data: from source to senses: build an installation that showcases the interplay between the physical world and the digital world using an interactive data physicalisation

You can find the complete course overview for this year in the University of Twente site

Year 3

In the third year, you can shape your curriculum in line with your interests. You can study abroad or follow a minor, for example Sustainability: global challenges, Interdisciplinary solutions at VU Amsterdam. In the second semester, you work independently on a final research project. The topic of your project relates to the subjects you have studied and the themes of the CreaTe programme as a whole.
