AI has shown it can beat world champions at complex games such as Go, but its real impact goes far beyond that. From revolutionising healthcare and transforming the car industry to detecting mental health risks through social media, AI is changing the world. These opportunities come with big questions too: about safety, ethics, and privacy, which you will learn to tackle as part of this programme.
VU Amsterdam’s Artificial Intelligence programme gives you both a solid foundation and the freedom to shape your studies. With our path system, you can move between paths and explore what excites you most. All students follow core courses like Machine Learning, ensuring you develop essential skills. From there, you can choose courses from two complementary paths:
- Socially Aware Computing - focusing on the social side of AI, where you study how technology interacts with people. Courses include Robot Interaction, psychology, ethics, law, and human–AI interaction
- Intelligent Systems – focusing on the scientific and technical side of AI, where you dive deeper into algorithms, data, and computer science.
Mathematics
For most of the courses you will need to understand maths in order to be able to understand the models, but you do not always need to implement the maths yourself. Next to that, there are dedicated maths courses (Logic & Sets in year 1, Probability & Statistics, Linear Algebra & Calculus in year 2).
- Mathematics A in Dutch secondary school prepares you for the programme, because you have knowledge on statistics, which is being taught in the second year and is used to analyse data.
- Mathematics B prepares you for our programme because it consists of calculus, which forms an important base for more technical AI-related courses. In addition, mathematical reasoning (proofs) as taught in maths B, prepares you for logic courses.
The start date of this programme is September 1st.
