Sustainability Office VU

Sustainability Office VU

Sustainability is one of the three priority areas of VU Amsterdam, alongside diversity and entrepreneurship. Since January 2023, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam has established a Sustainability Office to further embed sustainability within our organization.

Sustainability Office VU serves as the central hub for the execution of our sustainability strategy, led by a dedicated team responsible for implementing sustainability initiatives across research, education, valorization, and operations. We aim to promote collective engagement throughout the entire VU community, ensuring that sustainability is firmly integrated into our organization, and its significance is clearly conveyed to everyone within the VU community.

The sustainability team works on making our education, research, knowledge transfer and operations more sustainable and to activate our community. Our mission is to contribute to a positive impact on people and planet. We do this by, among other things, working to increase the offer of sustainability education, making business processes more sustainable and by connecting students and researchers for sustainability research. Curious about the content of all these projects? Take a look at the bottom of this page for more info.

Projects in the spotlight:

MatchMaking app

At VU, many people work on similar topics in different departments or faculties without being aware of their overlap in research topics. Interdisciplinary research can be both rewarding and challenging. The first step is to become aware of the interests of others.

At the Sustainability Office, we connect researchers interested in sustainability. We are developing an app to help you find colleagues with similar research interests at different faculties.

Will you become the Green Ambassador of your faculty or service?

The Green Ambassador Programme aims to set up several sustainability committees within Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. This will allow us to make more impact at faculty and department level. Some faculties and departments already have active committees working on sustainability. At ACTA, for example, the Green ACTA team meets to take up sustainability issues and actively steer the faculty towards sustainability.
