Route description and accessibility

The location of the VU Campus, adjacent to Amsterdam’s Zuidas and nearby Schiphol airport, makes it a readily accessible rendezvous.

Accessibility of the VU Campus

The VU buildings are all situated around a central campus square. With the nearby train station Amsterdam Zuid, the North/South metro line , as well as the metro lines 50 and 51, tram lines 5, 24 and 25 and busses with stops near the Main Building, the VU Campus is easily accessible with public transportation. The A10 allows for great accessibility by car as well. You can find the route descriptions for car and public transport below.

Hosts

In all our buildings you will find hosts who ensure that all visitors receive a warm welcome to VU Amsterdam. Feel free to approach a host if you have any questions.

  • 2026: overview large-scale mobility disruption A10 and Station Amsterdam Zuid [2026/05/6]

During the forthcoming year, there will be hard work on two major Zuidasdok projects: the renovation of the Amsterdam Zuid station and the reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer junction. This work will take place throughout the year and will regularly cause road and rail closures. Below is a global overview of the most significant work.

     TRAFFIC DISRUPTION A10  12- 18 May

From Tuesday 12 May to Thursday to Monday 18 May 2026 we expect major traffic disruption on the south side of Amsterdam. The A4 and the A10 South will be closed at various times. The extra travel time could amount to up to an hour.

    Closed

A10 Zuid (South) direction A1 Hengelo / A2 Utrecht (outer ring):

    • From Tuesday, 12 May 22.00 to Thursday, 14 May 05.00, only 2 lanes will be available during the day (13 May) on the A10 South towards A1 Hengelo and A2 Utrecht. In the evening and at night, only 1 lane will be available.
    • From Saturday, 16 May 22.00 to Monday, 18 May 05.00, only 2 lanes will be available during the day (17 May) on the A10 South towards A1 Hengelo and A2 Utrecht. In the evening and at night, only 1 lane will be available.

    A4 Badhoevedorp junction direction Amsterdam:

    • From Tuesday, 12 May 22.00 to Thursday, 14 May 05.00, the A4 is closed at the Badhoevedorp junction in the direction of Amsterdam. This applies to traffic coming from the direction of Schiphol and Amstelveen.
    • From Saturday, 16 May 22.00 to Monday, 18 May 05.00 the A4 is closed at the Badhoevedorp junction in the direction of Amsterdam. This applies to traffic coming from the direction of Schiphol and Amstelveen

More information about the traffic disruptions by car and public transport (train/metro/tram) can be found on the website Zuidas.nl. For more information about the traffic in the region Amsterdam, please refer to the accessibility page of the municipality of Amsterdam (AmsterdamBereikbaar.nl).

  • Overview of public transport congestions 2026 Zuidas [2026/05/06)

Below is an overview of the congestions known to date. All dates are subject to change.
Tip: check your route before heading out

    • 13–17 May: no train services

      Travel advice
As train services will be partially or completely suspended on these days, it is important to allow for extra travel time and alternative transport. The metro will continue to run, ensuring that the VU campus remains easily accessible via metro lines.

    Work
In April and May, preparations will be made for the construction of a wider underpass, which is due to be completed in 2027. The current 12-metre-wide underpass offers too little space and will be widened to 40 metres.

The cycle and pedestrian tunnel towards Antoni Vivaldistraat will be built at the same time. All tracks will be temporarily removed for this purpose. A concrete deck will then be laid, onto which the railway track will be placed. This will serve as the roof of the tunnel. The works are part of the Zuidasdok government project, centred around the station.
