Route description and accessibility

The location of the VU Campus, adjacent to Amsterdam’s Zuidas and nearby Schiphol airport, makes it a readily accessible rendezvous.

Accessibility of the VU Campus

The VU buildings are all situated around a central campus square. With the nearby train station Amsterdam Zuid, the North/South metro line , as well as the metro lines 50 and 51, tram lines 5, 24 and 25 and busses with stops near the Main Building, the VU Campus is easily accessible with public transportation. The A10 allows for great accessibility by car as well. You can find the route descriptions for car and public transport below.

  • 2025: overview large-scale mobility disruption A10 and Station Amsterdam Zuid [2025/06/16]

During the forthcoming year, there will be hard work on two major Zuidasdok projects: the renovation of the Amsterdam Zuid station and the reconstruction of the De Nieuwe Meer junction. This work will take place throughout the year and will regularly cause road and rail closures. Below is a global overview of the most significant work.

    (Long-term) traffic disruption A10 and A1

    - 20 - 22 June
: closure A10 due to 750th anniversary Amsterdam
On Friday evening, June 20, 2025, at 9 p.m., the Municipality will close the A10 West, South and East, between the exit to the A5 and the exit to the A1. This includes the junctions with the A2 and A4. The outer ring road will remain open for emergency and emergency services and public transport. Regional traffic will be diverted via the A1, A9 and A5. Sunday, June 22, the roads will reopen at 3 p.m.

    - Sunday 22 June to Friday 27 June NATO summit The Hague
Road users between Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam should expect initial disruption on the road as early as Sunday afternoon, 22 June. This is due to necessary preparations, such as the installation of barriers. Due to (temporary and partial) closures of motorways, slip roads, slip roads and viaducts and tunnels on the A5, A4, A44 and N44 roads, there is a risk of serious disruption from then until Thursday 26 June. The same applies to regional and local roads around and in The Hague, Wassenaar, Katwijk, Noordwijk, Haarlemmermeer, Leiden and Rotterdam. For information on the impact on regional and local roads, please check the website of your municipality or province. More information about the closures and diversions.

Public transport will run according to the regular timetable. However, extra traffic is expected on trains and buses. Allow for extra travel time. Leave home on time and keep an eye on the NS website/app.

    - 26 June to 12 July: closure A10 Zuid and Oost towards A1 Hengelo/A2 Utrecht. Also fewer trains to Amsterdam Zuid station

    - July 12 to August 20: long-term closure of Amstelveenseweg near the A10 for motorized traffic. Entrances and exits S108 to Amsterdam Oud Zuid and Buitenveldert (except Saturday, July 12) will remain open. The bicycle path and footpath on the side of Amsterdam UMC (location VUmc) will also be closed.

    - 19 July - 30 August: Parnassusweg obstruction. Limited tram traffic

    - 19 September - 6 October: closure A10 Oost between junction Watergraafsmeer and junction Amstel

    - 17 to 20 October: weekend closure A10 Zuid towards Hengelo/Utrecht

For more information, please refer to the accessibility page of the municipality of Amsterdam (AmsterdamBereikbaar.nl)

Weekend closures A10 Zuidas - junction Nieuwe Meer

    - 12 July to 20 August
: long-term closure Amstelveenseweg near the A10 for motorized traffic. Entrances and exits S108 to Amsterdam Oud Zuid and Buitenveldert (except Saturday, July 12) will remain open. The bicycle path and footpath on the side of Amsterdam UMC (location VUmc) will also be closed.

    Detour
    - Traffic direction Amsterdam via A10 Zuid: turn at S109
    - Traffic direction Amstelveen via A4: turn at exit 1 Sloten
    - Cyclists and pedestrians into and out of town will use the west side of Amstelveenseweg

    Public transport
    - Buses will run via Amstelveenseweg throughout the period but stops will be relocated
    - The Amstelveenseweg subway stop on the east side of Amstelveenseweg will be closed
    - Streetcar 24 will not run between Stadionplein and De Boelelaan from Saturday, July 12 to Friday, July 18

    - 7 to 10 November: weekend closure connecting road A10 West to A10 South and connecting road A4 to A10 West

More information about the traffic disruptions by car and public transport (train/metro/tram) can be found on the website Zuidas.nl or in this schematic overview (pdf).

    Long-term closure of 2nd Coentunnel (A10)
From July 12 to September 15, 2025, the 2nd Coentunnel will be completely closed for traffic from the A10 West to Zaanstad or the A10 North. The switch tube will be only available for buses and emergency services. Traffic with destination Zaanstad and Amsterdam-Noord will be diverted via the A10 West towards A10 Zuid, A10 Oost and A10 Noord. For more information, click here.

    Major events in Amsterdam
In 2025 there are also several major events, such as the party on the A10 for 750 years of Amsterdam (20-23 June), SAIL (20-24 August) and the NATO Summit in The Hague (24-25 June) that will cause traffic disruption at various locations in and around Amsterdam.
