Institute for Environmental Studies

The Institute for Environmental Studies (Instituut voor Milieuvraagstukken, IVM) is the oldest environmental research institute in The Netherlands (est. 1971), and is one of the world's leading institutes in sustainability science. IVM is an interdisciplinary research institute at VU Amsterdam that sits within the Faculty of Science. IVM has four main departments: Water and Climate Risk, Environmental Geography, Environmental Economics, and Environmental Policy Analysis.

Teaching

Teaching will be embedded in the BSc Earth, Economics, and Sustainability, MSc Earth Science, MSc Hydrology, MSc Environmental Resource Management, and MSc Climate Econometrics.

Open positions Natural hazards

  • Assistant Professor in Compound Hazard and Multi-Risk Statistics / Application is closed

    A scientist who uses state-of-the-art multivariate statistical modelling techniques to quantify interrelationships and interlinkages between different natural hazards and risks

  • Assistant Professor in Computational modelling of human-water dynamics / Application is closed

    An earth scientist, hydrologist, geographer (or similar) with strong python programming and modelling skills to develop and maintain (agent-based) models relating to water risks

    We offer positions (0.8 - 1.0 fte) as an assistant or associate professor depending on the departments. All positions are initially temporary with the prospect of a tenured position. The duration of the temporary contract can range from 1.5 years – 5 years depending on the circumstances and preferences. After a positive evaluation planned at 18 months, the position will be made permanent and you will be offered a personal career track with guidance, training and mentoring. 

    On full-time basis for Assistant Professor positions the remuneration  amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,974 (scale 11) and a maximum €6,181 (scale 12), depending on your education and experience. 

    Additionally, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes and regulations to promote a good work/life balance, such as:

    • a maximum of 41 days of annual leave based on full-time employment
    • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus
    • The possibility to work partly from home (hybrid working)
    • Solid pension scheme (ABP)
    • On campus child daycare, Sport facilities, Family support programs including: Dual career workshops, Dutch language class, tax & insurance workshop. (some might have additional costs)
    • Good paid parental leave scheme
    • International candidates may be eligible for a tax reduction (30% ruling)
    • Help and assistance with relocation (international candidates)

  • Assistant Professor in Water security and impacts / Application is closed

    A water scientist who studies water security from an interdisciplinary perspective, using both qualitative and quantitative data and methods to understand human-drought feedbacks.

Open positions Climate change and Ecosystem services

  • Assistant Professor in Climate extremes and artificial intelligence / Application is closed

    A climate or computational scientist to apply innovative Artificial Intelligence methods to improve our understanding and prediction of climate extremes.

  • Associate Professor in Global Land Use Modeling based on Computational General Equilibrium Models / Application is closed

    This Associate Professor position will aim at the evaluation of alternative land use policies and supply chain action towards sustainability by modeling the direct and indirect impacts and spill-overs on land use change. 

  • Assistant/associate professor in atmospheric dynamics and composition (shared with Earth sciences)

    An earth- or atmospheric scientist who studies contemporary climate change from an atmospheric perspective and studies the occurrence and role of for example drought or heatwaves and their impact on terrestrial processes such as carbon assimilation or wildfires via Earth system models (ideally EC-Earth) or big data analyses.

  • Assistant Professor in Land use contributions to meeting the new Global Biodiversity Framework

    This Assistant Professor position will analyze and evaluate different ways of implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework of the Convention of Biological Diversity. This will include the assessment of biodiversity outcomes and alternative pathways of fulfilling global targets by regional and more localized actions.
