Science: solutions for the future

Sustainability, climate change, biodiversity, digital and connected society, data science, medicines and vaccines, medical technology, food and water, living environment and health: the major challenges of our time require fundamental solutions. The experimental, computational and interdisciplinary approach of the Faculty of Science at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam is essential in meeting these challenges.

Our scientists are constantly pushing the boundaries with their contributions to these themes. They do this through their research, through valorization and by educating new generations of socially engaged global citizens. What’s more: the valuable mix of various types of research in our faculty enables a constant cross-pollination between our globally renowned researchers.

In turn, they are inspired daily by our students! Our students are the pride of our faculty: they are divers, ambitious, engaged and entrepreneurial. Every day these students contribute their refreshing insights to their programmes, which are built around innovative, world-class education. Here, our students acquire the knowledge and skills to take on the challenges of the future.

BETA: excellence in research and education

Former dean Guus Schreiber, education director Mareanne Karssen and director of Bètapartners Jeroen Maréchal show what the faculty has to offer.
