Updates

New ASI Research Cluster: Arctic Change

 We are happy to announce a new ASI Research Cluster on Arctic Change, led by Dr. Jorien Vonk and Dr. Özlem Terzi. The cluster will host its kick-off lunch seminar on 26 September (12:00 - 13:00). ASI Innovation Projects

 Apart from the annual Seed Money grants, ASI has introduced the ASI Research Innovation Programme. The Innovation Programme offers a space for connection and knowledge exchange, allowing VU researchers to develop new research initiatives and to obtain support on grant acquisition from ASI, the Grant Office and IXA. Read more about the projects that emerged from the first edition of the programme.

Join our two storytelling workshops on May 23rd and June 6th, 2024, at VU Amsterdam. Learn the art of crafting compelling stories aimed at decision-makers across all levels. Led by experts Sjoerd Kluiving and Mark Baildon, these workshops will equip you with the tools to inspire action through the use of vivid and personal stories instead of abstract and distant jargon filled articles.

The obligation to create and implement a transition plan has far-reaching consequences for companies and raises many questions. During the A4CL Congress, co-hosted by the ASI cluster Climate Change and Energy Transition, we want to gather key actors and leading experts in a discussion about the implementation and climate transition plans and how compelling the climate goals are.

In light of the upcoming 2024 European Parliament elections, this SDG Academy delves into the topic of the European Green Deal (EGD). This session features VU CEC expert, Dr. Mathieu Blondeel, ASI Arctic Change Cluster coordinator, Dr. Özlem Terzi, and Dr. Niels Debonne from Milieudefensie, who will bring in diverse perspective on the implementation of the EGD, with topics ranging from geopolitics of energy to the Arctic under the EGD.

Take a seat in the lecture hall and get to know several energy cooperatives from the region. Learn the basics about energy cooperatives during the mini lecture for beginners before having the opportunity to ask all the pressing and not so pressing questions to the cooperatives present.  This event is organised by the COOP Centraal initiative of which ASI forms part. The 11th International Congress of Arctic Social Sciences (ICASS XI), partners with UArctic Congress and High North Dialogue to organize a major Arctic Congress Bodø 2024. Bringing three conferences together in Bodø - one of the 2024 European Cultural Capitals - will be an extraordinary showcase of Arctic cooperation.

Call for papers: Thinking with water - Exploring the edges |Deadline for submissions: 15 June 2024

In fall 2024 (1-3 October 2024), the Critical Arctic Studies Symposium will explore diverse, multiple edges in different watery relations and contexts; to blur the edges between water bodies and land as well as between human and non-human entities in watery environments; and to problematize, colonialist traditions and contemporary, modern epistemic practices of thinking of water. Read more here.

New ASI Team Member

As of 1 April, Paulina Raniecka has joined the ASI team as Communications Coordinator and will focus on the ASI network at VU, assisting with our ASI research clusters and ASI’s outreach activities. Paulina is not new to VU since she has been working for the NEWAVE project and has been a part of IVM as a PhD candidate in water governance. With the ASI team expanding, ASI is aiming for increased community engagement and improved outreach and visibility.
