Waste disposal

Last updated on 5 October 2023
From beverage cans to operational waste: about 25 different waste streams are collected at VU Amsterdam. On this page you can find more information about where to deposit different types of waste at VU and how to contribute to our sustainable waste policies.

Together with out waste supplier, we have initiated the Zero Waste programme. Read more about this at Zero Waste.

  • Separate waste streams

In total, about 25 different waste streams are collected on the VU campus. This includes paper, glass, green waste, wood, metal and various kinds of chemical waste. More and more general waste bins will be replaced by waste stations for separate waste collection. You can find these in central spots, such as the pantry/coffee machines, in open work spaces and around lecture halls.

Other operational waste, such as white/brown goods, glass, metals (steel, iron, aluminium), greenery and wood, is collected separately at the recycling points and waste depots on the VU campus. Recycling points are located in the basements of most VU buildings. Chemical waste is collected separately by HRM Occupational Health, Safety and the Environment, in accordance with the relevant regulations and legal requirements. In the research or lab environment, closed-off waste areas are available for this purpose.

FCO and HRM Occupational Health, Safety and the Environment arrange for the waste to be brought to the waste depots on the VU campus. The disposal and processing of waste is outsourced to specialized waste management companies.

  • Request an extra container

Do you temporarily expect to have extra waste? Then you can request a waste container. Make sure to state clearly for which type of waste stream you will need a waste container and where and when you need it. This is free of charge.

The container(s) will be delivered on the requested day and picked up on a agreed upon date.

    • As a VU employee or -student you can request an additional waste container (non-medical and non-chemical) for a specific purpose via the Service Portal
    • Are you not in possession of a VUnet ID? Please use the External Service Portal
    • To dispose chemical waste, contact HRM Occupational Health, Safety and the Environment at secretariaat.amd@vu.nl

Or contact FCO Servicedesk with your request (please note: only operational waste, no medical waste).

  • Full litter or waste paper bin?

If you see a full litter or waste paper bin, please report it. Your report will be acted on within 24 hours.

  • Applying for medical waste containers

    • If you are a VU Amsterdam employee or have internal cost centre/WBS authorisation, please request hospital (medical) waste containers through the Service Portal. You will be charged for your order. Indicate the internal cost centre/WBS to which these costs can be charged.
    • Are you not employed by VU Amsterdam and/or not in possession of a VUnet ID? Please use the External Service Portal
