Waste collection and disposal
FCO Logistics provides disposal of industrial and hazardous waste from the lab environment, such as chemical waste and Specific Hospital Waste (SZA). Transport takes place in accordance with ADR legislation.
For the collection and storage of waste, separate waste rooms are set up in the research environment. Roller containers are present here for the collection of commercial waste, such as paper/cardboard, glass, P/D and residual waste. These are emptied by FCO Logistics during waste rounds. There are also safety cabinets in the waste rooms for the storage of hazardous waste and space to place drums containing SZA and solid chemical waste.
As a researcher, you are responsible for properly packaging and labeling the waste as well as reporting waste for transport. Only use UN-approved collection equipment provided by the VU and follow the guidelines for storage (see Waste disposal guide for hazardous waste). Notification of transport goes through Labservant (= waste request). FCO Logistics then ensures that the hazardous waste is disposed of. Please note: Waste that is not properly packaged, labeled or notified will not be disposed of!
Radioactive waste is collected by an outside service through a special procedure. For more information, contact VU Amsterdam's Coordinating Radiation Expert (j.h.p.m.houben-weerts@vu.nl).

Textile cleaning
FCO has outsourced textile cleaning (such as hand/tea towels, lab coats) to an external party. Faculties and departments of VU Amsterdam can use this for a fee. By mutual agreement, agreements are made about the frequency of the work, the manner in which the service is performed and the location where the items are collected and delivered. This varies per building and per user. Users themselves are responsible for depositing items at the agreed upon collection locations and in accordance with applicable guidelines and conditions (think of autoclaving lab coats).
Requests for textile cleaning are made through the FCO Service Desk. Charges will be passed on. Invoicing is done directly by the supplier, in accordance with the price agreements in the framework agreement.
