A Digital Object Identifier (DOI) is a so-called Persistent Identifier (PID); a permanent reference to a (digital) object. The DOI of a publication, dataset or software permanently refers to a landing page that provides information (metadata) about this, and if possible, also give access.
Grey literature includes material and research produced outside traditional publication and distribution channels, such as reports, policy papers, working papers, conference contributions and more.
Requesting a DOI for grey literature makes it more visible online. This can have a positive impact and makes it easier to track impact through citations.
As a VU researcher, you can request a DOI for your grey literature if you have created it for the VU. To do so, you must register the grey literature in the Pure research information system and publish it via the VU Research Portal.
You can then request a DOI via the Service Portal.
The request will be checked by an employee of the VU University Library. If the application is approved, you will receive the DOI.
For more information about requesting a DOI for grey literature in Pure, go to LibGuides > Pure – Publications > Request a DOI.
