Switching from Zoom to Teams

Go to the Teams Meetings Knowledge Portal
Last updated on 17 February 2026
The VU-wide contract with Zoom expires on 1 May 2026 and will not be renewed. Microsoft Teams has been available to all VU staff and students for some time now. Teams offers equivalent functionality, allowing us to avoid duplicate costs. Panopto, the VU's video platform, can also be used as an alternative in specific situations.

Careful transition with support

The IT and SOZ departments are working together on a careful plan for phasing out Zoom. We are identifying who still uses Zoom and for what purposes. In discussions with the staff members concerned, we are investigating what is needed to ensure that Teams (and Panopto where necessary) fits in well with practice. We are guiding staff members step by step in the transition to Teams, with clear explanations and practical support. New Teams functionalities are being investigated and made available where relevant.

Integration in Canvas with Teams Meetings active

Lecturers can now use the integration in Canvas with Teams Meetings to easily create online lectures and sessions. This integration is similar to the current integration with Zoom, which will be discontinued due to the termination of the Zoom license at the end of April this year.

The integration in Canvas with Zoom will remain available until the end of period 4 (end of March 2026). After this date, the integration will be deactivated and all online meetings previously scheduled with Zoom will no longer be accessible via Canvas. Sessions that have already been scheduled via the Zoom link in Canvas and take place after March, 31 need to be rescheduled by using the new Teams Meetings integration. More information can be found on vu.nl: MS Teams Meetings in education.

Support and training for working with Teams

From 18 March to 6 May, we are hosting weekly demos on various days. Each week, we offer both a Dutch and an English session.  Each demo takes place from 12:50–13:20 or 16:00–16:30.

Sign up for a demo here.

Also take a look at the SharePoint page Switching from Zoom to Teams with extensive information on how to use Microsoft Teams meetings.

If you use Zoom and would like advice already now on how to use Teams, you can contact the project leader Nicole Prins via n.prins@vu.nl.

  • Canvas - Teams Link for Education

Since beginning of February 2026, Canvas offers an integration with MS Teams Meetings. This integration allows lecturers to easily schedule online lectures within the course environment in Canvas, similar to the current integration with Zoom.

For more information, see MS Teams Meetings in education

The integration with Zoom will remain available until the end of period 4 (end of March 2026).

Please note:  scheduled online meetings in Zoom will also no longer be accessible via Canvas after 31 March 2026. Lecturers must reschedule these sessions by using the new Teams Meetings link. From period 5 onwards, lecturers will use the integration with Teams Meetings in Canvas for online or hybrid lectures.

  • Can Teams offer the same features as Zoom?

When Covid started, Teams was unable to offer the same quality as Zoom. Nowadays, Teams has improved significantly and many of the earlier complaints have been addressed, such as the options for breakout rooms.

  • Will Zoom no longer be usable at all?

In a limited number of cases, Zoom may remain available, for example when there is truly no suitable alternative.
