MS Teams Meetings for education

More information on Sharepoint
Last updated on 27 March 2026
Use MS Teams Meetings to present and collaborate online using video, audio, chat and screen sharing.

MS Teams is the interactive online conferencing tool for teaching and learning at VU Amsterdam. Let students communicate with you and each other via video and chat. Use the various Teams apps, share your screen or take a poll, allowing you and your students to truly collaborate online. MS Teams' break-out rooms allow you to divide your students into smaller private groups so they can discuss a topic intensively or practise their skills.

  • Organise meetings directly from your Canvas Course.
  • Chat, share your screen or record your meeting
  • Use automatic captions or transcription.
  • Use breakout rooms to facilitate discussions
  • Create additional interaction with the polls application of the Whiteboard functionality.

  • Link Canvas - Teams Meetings

From Canvas, it is possible to directly create and schedule Teams Meetings for participants in the Canvas Course. To do this, go to the Canvas Course and select 'Teams Meetings' from the menu.

  • Issue with MS Teams Meetings in Canvas for Students

Unfortunately, many students are unable to log in to the Teams Meetings application in Canvas. This prevents them from accessing the Teams Meetings created via the new Canvas integration.

The temporary workaround is to copy the join link to the scheduled Teams Meeting to a Canvas announcement or Canvas page. We understand this isn't ideal, but this allows students to participate in the Teams Meeting as usual.

The issue is due to the alias the student uses as their primary email address: studentnumber@student.vu.nl or a private email address instead of name@student.vu.nl. This is blocking the connection between Teams and Canvas from working. IT Central is urgently working on a permanent solution.

If you still have problems, please contact your faculty's Canvas support.

  • Can Teams Meetings offer the same as Zoom?

Teams Meetings has many similar interactive features as Zoom has, such as recording lectures, breakout rooms and a whiteboard functionality.

Please visit the link below to learn more about these features.

Manuals for these features can be found on the VU Sharepoint.

  • How to log in in MS Teams Meetings via Canvas

Use your VU credentials to log in via Teams Meetings.

Are you still having problems and do you see the message "Your Microsoft Account isn't linked to your LMS account"? Please check whether your VU email address is set as the default email address in Canvas.

    • Please go to "Account" in Canvas and select "Settings." Add your VU email address and/or move the star icon to your VU email address.

The Canvas - Teams Meetings link only works if your VU email address is set up this way. You can only use your personal email address as a secondary email address.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

Can I automatically add a group of students, for example for a seminar, to a Teams Meeting via Canvas?

    • Unfortunately, that's not possible. You can, however, give the Teams Meeting a logical name, for example, Seminar Group A or Seminar Group B, and create the Teams Meeting via Canvas without inviting the students. Students can then join the right seminar group themselves via Canvas.
