Shaping the cities of tomorrow

Regional and Urban Economics (Spatial and Applied Economics)

This specialisation prepares you for a career in regional and urban economics, a field that is increasingly important as cities grow, housing becomes less affordable, and spatial inequalities widen.

The specialisation teaches you how to analyse large spatial datasets and apply economic theory to real-world urban and regional issues. While urban and regional challenges often have global roots, their local impacts vary widely. That is why the programme combines economic, spatial, and policy perspectives to give you a well-rounded understanding of how places develop and function.

What makes this specialisation unique is that it offers a strong link to real estate and land markets, which is highly relevant, as location is a key driver of economic outcomes in both urban and regional contexts. The programme also offers a unique opportunity to take courses on Geographical Information Systems and Housing Economics and Finance, allowing you handle spatial data and to explore the broader economic systems that shape cities and regions.

  • In Period 1 (Sep–Oct), you’ll take foundational courses in Microeconomics and Econometrics. These provide you with the theoretical and empirical tools needed for advanced economic analysis.
  • In Periods 2 and 4 (Nov–March), you’ll take two core courses that explore the economic dimensions of cities and regions. Regional and Urban Economics examines the economic forces that shape the development of cities and regions. Urban Economic Challenges and Policies focuses on urban issues such as housing, segregation, and inequality, and emphasizes the evaluation of urban policies. You can also take the Geographical Information Systems (GIS) course, which teaches you how to interpret spatial data and carry out spatial analysis.
  • Throughout the year, you can choose electives that reflect your interests — for example, in real estate and housing economics or transport economics.
  • In Periods 5 and 6 (Apr–Jun), you’ll write your master's thesis under the supervision of a lecturer. This is your opportunity to conduct original research on a topic of your choice, often in combination with an internship at an external organisation or research institute.

The start date of this programme is September 1st
