Social and Cultural Anthropology (pre-master)

Learn the basics of anthropological research

In the Social and Cultural Anthropologypre-Master’s programme, you’ll study the central themes, concepts and theories in anthropology, practice academic writing, and learn basic skills in anthropological research.  
The programme aims to ensure you are well-equipped to start your Social and Cultural Anthropology Master’s programme. It offers a well-balanced and diverse study load, and provides a challenging intellectual journey.

The pre-Master’s programme must be completed within one academic year. It’s therefore not possible to re-enrol in the pre-Master’s.

The pre-Master’s programme

The pre-Master’s programme starts with an introductory course, during which you’ll learn about the core themes in anthropology. This course is followed by an introduction into qualitative and quantitative methods in the social sciences. Subsequently a short course in academic writing is also part of the programme. Furthermore you'll learn about the specific methods anthropologists use and explore the main challenges of the 21st century and how anthropologists look at them. In the last month of the programme, you’ll learn how to write a research proposal.

After completing the pre-Master’s in Social and Cultural Anthropology you are admissible to the Master’s programme in the following academic year.

  • The pre-Master’s programme consists of 30 ECTS.
  • The study load is equally divided over the academic year.
  • Classes and seminars take place on Friday’s. 
  • Every credit equals 28 hours of study. This means that a 6-credit course takes 168 hours of study.
  • You have to successfully complete the pre-Master’s programme within one academic year. Pre-Master results are valid until 1 September of the following academic year.
  • The tuition fee amounts to half of the regular college tariff.
