Lay the foundation for your legal career

You will learn the skills to successfully contribute to solving social problems.

Your diploma means that you can communicate about 'Law in Action' with colleagues in the legal profession as well as with non-specialists. You will also know how to manoeuvre between theory and practice. And you will be able to give meaning to norms and values that keep society on track.

If you successfully complete the master’s programme in Law at VU Amsterdam, your degree qualifies as the internationally-recognised Master of Laws (abbreviated as LLM) degree. It also qualifies you to use the Dutch title 'meester in de rechten’ (mr.).

What can you do after your Master's degree?

Entering the job market

The master's programme is an important step in preparing for your career. The master's degree is not only a requirement for being admitted to the follow-up programmes for becoming a judge, lawyer or public prosecutor, but it is often required outside of these so-called robed professions as well. During the master's programme in Law, you will sharpen your legal skills. And through the wide selection of tracks, you will develop specialised knowledge in an area of law that appeals to you.

The programme gives you a broad perspective, both legally and socially. More than half of our graduates end up in traditional legal professions, in the positions of: judge, lawyer, public prosecutor, corporate lawyer or legal advisor. But a law degree also prepares you for many other positions, such as that of a journalist, teacher, PhD candidate, policy officer at a municipality or province, legal assistant at a ministry or a position in the service sector, in politics or in civil society organisations.

Scientific career

The master's programme in Law is a good springboard for an academic career. After obtaining your master's degree, you can conduct PhD research at a university or research institute. For more information, please visit this page.
