Discover the criminal mind

Sem02 (2025-2026) Tackling Crime*

Antisocial behaviour poses a major burden for society. Revealing its causes may provide clues for treatment and prevention.

Criminology, the scientific study of antisocial and criminal behaviour, has traditionally been dominated by sociologically oriented theories of crime causation. This honours course will introduce students to the biopsychosocial perspective on the development of antisocial and criminal behaviour, an emerging paradigm in the criminological discipline. The biopsychosocial perspective encompasses several subfields that seek to unpack the association between genes, biology, the brain, psychology, psychiatry and the environment, to explain the development of  different types of antisocial behaviours. Incorporating these factors into the complicated mix of crime causation may provide new clues for treatment and prevention of antisocial and criminal behaviour.
