Uncover happiness and contribute to the wellbeing of others.

Sem02 (2024-2025) The Happiness Experiment: Cultivating personal and collective wellbeing*

What do we think makes us truly happy? What is a life worth living for? What role do external factors like success, wealth, and society play in our overall happiness? What happens in the brain when we feel happy? Which practical steps can you take to increase your happiness and that of those around you? We will explore these questions through experience-based classes, engaging discussions, inspiring guest lecturers like a brain scientist and a Buddhist teacher, and a community project. You will gain invaluable tools for inner development, enhancing wellbeing and making a meaningful impact on your community. Students from all disciplines are welcome to join!

In a world marked by increasing stress and pressure, the pursuit of happiness is more relevant than ever. This course provides a foundation to understand and practice happiness from a multidisciplinary perspective. By participating in this course, you will:

1. Explore Diverse Views on Happiness: Gain insights from diverse and provoking viewpoints on happiness, from guest lecturers in the field of psychology, philosophy, neuroscience, Buddhism and more. This multidimensional approach will enrich your understanding of this fundamental concept.

2. Follow Evidence-informed practices for individual happiness: Learn to assess your own well-being, identify the factors contributing to your happiness, and experiment with personalized strategies that may positively contribute to your overall wellbeing.

3. Contribute to Happier Communities: Engage in a community project, where you will collaborate with community partners, preferably within the VU. This experience will empower you to take responsibility and make a positive impact on your local community.

Disclaimer: The course may also bring up difficult emotions. Please be aware that this course is not meant as a replacement for therapy nor promises you to become happier.
