Science and Religion: understandings of life, nature and humanity

Sem01 (2024-2025) Science and Religion: Harmony and Discord

Throughout history, science and religion have been sources for understanding and contemplating the world and our place in it. In this course, we dive into history and the sources of scientific and religious understandings of the world. You will find learning and inspiration by studying original texts from various times and traditions.

Science and religion are nowadays often seen as conflicting forces. Many scientists adamantly insist that religious belief has no place in a scientific worldview and attitude, while some religious believers vigorously dispute the truth claims of science. History shows that this view is a recent development in western society of the 19th century. Educated people have generally been convinced that the opposite of the conflict thesis was true. Science and religion were seen to go together harmoniously instead of essentially subverting and thwarting each other.

In this course you will dive into the vast literature on the topic, original writings of thinkers from various times and places. These will be the basis for presentations and discussions in class.
