Choose your societal resilience programme at VU Amsterdam

Unravel the issues related to societal resilience

How can you support someone who is struggling with questions about life, death and purpose? How can you promote social cohesion? Find out which programmes at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam you can take if you want to study societal resilience.

You likely communicate with your friends mostly over apps. At school, you may prefer to watch videos. And in recent times, it has been quite a challenge to take classes online and to rarely see others in person. With all these gadgets at your disposal, you know within seconds what is happening on the other side of the world. But it is perhaps not as easy to reach out to someone personally and ask how they are doing. Maybe you have times when you feel a bit down. Are you comfortable sharing your thoughts with someone? Or do you distract yourself with gaming, playing sports and drinking, or just stay home on the couch under a blanket? Everyone reacts differently to social and societal challenges, and reaching out is perhaps the toughest thing to do. The moment you feel disconnected, you can start to feel lonely. This doesn’t only happen to the elderly, but to every age group.

If you want to study societal resilience at VU Amsterdam, you can choose from several different programmes. For example, you can look at how people communicate with each other, how different people live together in a cosmopolitan city and how social poverty remains hidden. You could analyse how multiple religious viewpoints can clash with each other and how the truth can be different for everyone. You can explore ways to strengthen resilience and promote social cohesion. You could also work on current healthcare issues which doctors, insurance companies, pharmacists, patients and scientists all approach from their own frame of reference. Then perhaps you would discover the perfect combination in which different solutions could reinforce each other. No matter what area you want to focus on,  if you want to study how people react to change and you find it interesting to interpret the differences and similarities, then societal resilience will be a good fit for you.
