Interested in technology? At the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), you can choose from a wide range of technology programmes. What’s unique is that you can also take one of two bachelor programmes offered in collaboration with the University of Twente (UT): Mechanical Engineering and Creative Technology.
You’ll study mostly in Amsterdam, with additional courses and hands-on projects at the UT campus in Twente. After three years, you’ll graduate with a Bachelor of Science degree from a technical university.
What is the Alliance VU-UT?
The Alliance VU-UT is a strategic partnership between VU Amsterdam and the UT, designed to strengthen education, research and innovation together. As complementary universities, we share a personal approach, strong social engagement and and a commitment to tackling some of today’s most pressing societal challenges.
Through this alliance, we offer two unique bachelor programmes that prepare students for a future full of technological innovation and real-world impact. Together, we train a new generation of engineers and technical professionals who use technology to drive progress – from sustainable energy and AI to smart cities and medical innovations.
Programmes within the Alliance VU-UT
Within the Alliance VU-UT, you can choose from two unique bachelor programmes that combine technology with societal impact:
- Creative Technology (CreaTe)
Blend creativity, technology and societal impact
Learn how to develop technology that really makes a difference – from smart apps to interactive installations. You’ll build prototypes, programme and explore user experience, design thinking and electrical engineering.
You’ll study at VU Amsterdam and work on projects in the high-tech labs at the UT. This way, you’ll develop both your technical skills and a design-focused, socially aware perspective.
CreaTe at VU Amsterdam was named a 'Top Programme' in 2025 by the Keuzegids, following the same recognition at the UT in 2024.
Become a mechanical engineer with impact
In ME, you’ll learn how to design, build and improve sustainable technologies. Think smart robots, medical devices or clean energy solutions. You’ll gain a solid foundation in mechanics, maths, materials science and system design, applying your knowledge in real-world projects.
You’ll attend lectures at VU Amsterdam and work on practical assignments in the high-tech labs at the UT. This ensures you learn both theory and practice, preparing you for real technological and societal challenges.
ME achieved the highest student satisfaction in Mechanical Engineering in 2023 and 2024, according to the Keuzegids.
How studying within the Alliance VU-UT works
Here's what your studies will look like:
