Exhibition at VU Amsterdam | Studying with a Disability (SMF)

Exhibition at VU Amsterdam | Studying with a Disability (SMF)

The VU exhibition "Studying with a Disability" highlights the personal stories of VU students who are studying with a disability.

Through a photo exhibition, nine VU students share their stories. They talk about the obstacles they face while studying, their resilience and perseverance, and the support they need to fully participate in their studies and student life. Accessible and inclusive education is not a given, and it concerns us all.

More than just an exhibition

"I have a disability, but I am not my disability."

The exhibition invites you to reflect on the diversity of student experiences at the VU. By highlighting personal stories, the VU aims to foster greater understanding, recognition, and awareness among VU staff and students. At the same time, the exhibition underscores that a need for support does not define a person’s talents or ambitions, and that appropriate support can actually contribute to academic success and equal opportunities.

Opening

On September 28, the exhibition will be opened by Rector Magnificus Jeroen Geurts. Students, faculty, staff, and visitors are cordially invited to attend the opening to view the stories, engage in conversation, and work together to build a university where every student feels welcome, seen, and supported. The exhibition will be on view from September 28 through January 1

The exhibition is an initiative of the Student Development Department (SOZ) at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and was organized by the Studying with a Disability (SMF) team. Through these students’ stories, VU Amsterdam aims to contribute to a learning environment where every student feels welcome, seen, and supported.

For more information about the exhibition, to request a guided tour or explanation, or for support with internal outreach, communication, and promotional activities, please contact the Studying with a Disability (SMF) team.
