Choose your artificial intelligence programme at VU Amsterdam

Discover how human and machine intelligence complement each other

Do you think that your doctor might one day be replaced by a robot loaded with artificial intelligence? Do you imagine that supermarkets will operate without any staff? Do you see opportunities to improve healthcare with AI? Find out which programmes at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam you can take if you want to study artificial intelligence.

Artificial intelligence is already much more widespread than you might know. We can already see the use of robots in healthcare and education. In shipping hubs, unmanned vehicles are working to fulfil orders. Your smartphone with all of your apps and even this website—almost every device you use every day is full of artificial intelligence (AI) applications.

If you choose to study artificial intelligence at VU Amsterdam, you will explore the technology on which AI is based and its applications in society. VU Amsterdam is known for its pioneering research into hybrid applications of AI. For instance, current research is looking at how a computer can act as a full team member in a research group, and prototypes of robots are being developed that look very different from the robots that we know today. After all, does a robot really have to look like a human being? What do you think?

If you are interested in artificial intelligence, you will not only learn programming languages and how to build algorithms, but you will also gain a deeper understanding of the ethical aspects of machine learning applications. And you will look at the social and psychological impact on the general public. Human and machine intelligence can work together and complement each other perfectly. AI can analyse and interpret data at lightning speed, never gets tired or sick, and can simply work 24/7. However, communication is much more than combining zeros and ones. As people, we also use non-verbal communication to understand each other better. The tone in which we talk to each other, for instance, influences the way we understand and answer a question. This capability is still in its infancy when it comes to AI. If you choose to study artificial intelligence at VU Amsterdam, you will look at issues in society and discover where you can apply machine learning. You will become part of a wonderful discipline that has a lot in store for the near future. Join our community!
