The Ethnographic Impact Lab (eLAB), an initiative of the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, highlights the importance of ethnographic research and aims to increase its social impact. We do that by connecting anthropologists with communities, policymakers, NGOs, change-makers and other stakeholders to design collaborative projects that matter.
Here's what makes us different: we don't just study society - we collaborate with the people who shape it. By using creative methods like multimedia workshops, storytelling, and community exhibitions we can reach beyond traditional academic outputs.
Why the Impact Lab exists
Ethnographic research uncovers the complexities of social life that other methods might lack: the lived experiences, cultural dynamics, and power structures that shape how people navigate their lives. But too often, this knowledge stays within academic walls. Our eLab makes ethnographic research more accessible and ensures it reaches the people and organisations who can use it to drive meaningful change.
