Phased campus renewal

VU Amsterdam as part of Knowledge Quarter Zuidas.

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), Amsterdam UMC (AUMC) and the City of Amsterdam (Zuidas) are jointly developing Kenniskwartier Zuidas into a leading innovation district with a mix of entrepreneurs, researchers, doctors, lawyers, students, scientists and residents. Within this, VU Amsterdam and Amsterdam UMC are realizing a campus where health, science and business come together.

Phases in campus redeveloping

Redeveloping of our campus will be carried out in phases. Thanks to the step-by-step, flexible approach of the Campus Development Master Plan, it remains possible to respond to new developments.

We are tackling housing for education, research and healthcare first. Next, we will focus more on the new functions of our campus within Zuidas and Amsterdam. And finally, we are looking at opportunities for further sustainability.

Phases redeveloping campus

  • Phase 1 (until 2028)

In the current phase that runs until 2028, we invest in existing and new buildings for our core research, education and care functions. In addition, the campus square will become a green, lively and attractive space for students, staff and the neighbourhood. The W&N building will also be demolished and rebuilt during this period. This phase will be completed when all users of the W&N building are housed elsewhere.

  • Phase 2 (until 2035)

In the phase up to 2035, we continue to develop the campus into a multi-use area, a place for studying, working, business, leisure and living. There are plans for a new education building west of the New University Building, new construction for alliances and market parties on the site of the former School Work Gardens and new construction on the south side of the campus for VU Amsterdam's programme, sports and housing.

The cooperation agreement with the municipality includes the possibility of building 1,200 to 1,600 housing units. For this housing programme, there will be cooperation with housing corporations with VU Amsterdam issuing the land on a long lease.

Furthermore, the municipality of Amsterdam will realize soccer fields for SC Buitenveldert and sports facilities on the vacated site of the W&N building.

  • Phase 3 (until after 2040)

In the phase that continues beyond 2040, we focus primarily on our sustainability goals. Switching to renewable energy sources will require large-scale renovation or replacement new construction.

Among others, the Main Building, the Transitorium and the Amsterdam UMC outpatient clinic will be made gas-free. We are also looking at how we can make the buildings more energy efficient through, for example, better insulation and cold-heat storage to regulate the temperature.
