The VU School of Religion and Theology (VU SRT) advances and enriches understanding of theology and religion, fostering shared values and a common language. Through our education and research, we equip students and professionals to make a meaningful impact within their communities and in wider society.
Learning in dialogue
At the VU School of Religion and Theology, theologians and scholars of religion engage in dialogue and mutual learning across a wide range of religious traditions. The study of sacred texts—such as the Bible, the Qur'an, and others—plays a central role in both our research and teaching. We explore these texts from their origins and content to their influence on contemporary society and politics. This open and interdisciplinary approach makes VU SRT a uniquely inspiring environment for faith leaders, academics, and professionals working in the domains of theology, spirituality, philosophy of life, and the search for meaning.
Our graduates go on to pursue diverse careers—as pastors, spiritual leaders, chaplains, educators, researchers, policy advisors, and professionals in sectors such as (international) business, culture, media, healthcare, education, government, journalism, conflict mediation, the police, and the military.
Future-proof
While many universities are reducing their teaching in theology or eliminating it altogether, VU Amsterdam remains steadfast, placing religion and theology at the core of its mission. Here, theology and religious studies are deeply intertwined, holding a permanent and vital role.
Our strength lies in fostering connections between individuals, their beliefs, science, and society. For students seeking purposeful careers and for leaders aiming to future-proof their organisations, our approach offers invaluable opportunities.
Social impact
Together with our social partners, we develop knowledge and programmes that make a tangible impact. In sectors such as healthcare, education, correctional institutions, business, and government, diverse worldviews intersect daily - demanding an understanding of both their connections and differences. Our expertise is also sought in areas like trauma and grief, sustainable development, and extremism.
A group of 25 leading Dutch opinion-makers and executives help keep our work sharp and relevant. Active in politics, government, philosophical organisations, NGOs, educational and cultural institutions, and the business world, they represent precisely those fields where the demand for committed, well-educated professionals is greatest.
Postgraduate programmes
VU Amsterdam's School of Religion and Theology continues to respond to the growing need for postgraduate programmes across the rich diversity of worldviews in the Netherlands, including Islam, (migrant) churches, Hinduism, and Buddhism. We host nine seminaries that prepare leaders for service within their faith communities. The university’s broad academic environment and its emphasis on interfaith dialogue not only enhance their effectiveness in leadership roles but also deepen their personal faith and understanding.
Interdisciplinary
Since 1 April 2025, our School has been part of the newly established Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities (FSG). Across the social sciences, humanities, and even other academic fields, there is a growing recognition of the importance of worldview in both research and education. Worldviews play a crucial role in addressing many social and ethical issues. Our interdisciplinary approach enables us to forge meaningful connections and translate shared knowledge into practice.
International reputation
In today’s globalised world, religion and spirituality are more relevant than ever. Their influence on individuals - their thoughts, actions, and decisions - remains profound: an estimated 85% of the global population is shaped personally, economically, and politically by religious or spiritual convictions. Within the Netherlands’ pluralistic and cosmopolitan society, our School plays a key role. Thanks to our strong international reputation in theology, we attract PhD students from every continent.
