Department of Earth Sciences

The department of Earth Sciences harbors a wide range of Earth science disciplines and offers new colleagues an exciting environment, stimulating interdisciplinary research while contributing to highly-ranked teaching programs. The department offers some of the best lab- and field facilities and has an excellent track record in enabling young researchers to make the most out of their career.

Teaching

Teaching will be embedded in the BSc Earth Sciences and BSc Earth, Economics and Sustainability programmes as well as the MSc Earth Sciences and MSc Hydrology programmes. 

Open positions Natural and human-made disasters

  • Assistant/associate professor in natural hazards

    An earth scientist who studies natural hazards (e.g. earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides) and translates this knowledge into a better assessment of the potential impact of these hazards for modern society.

  • What are we offering?

    We offer positions (0.8 - 1.0 fte) as an assistant or associate professor depending on the departments. All positions are initially temporary with the prospect of a tenured position. The duration of the temporary contract can range from 1.5 years – 5 years depending on the circumstances and preferences. After a positive evaluation planned at 18 months, the position will be made permanent and you will be offered a personal career track with guidance, training and mentoring. 

    On full-time basis for Assistant Professor positions the remuneration  amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,974 (scale 11) and a maximum €6,181 (scale 12), depending on your education and experience. 

    Additionally, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes and regulations to promote a good work/life balance, such as:

    • a maximum of 41 days of annual leave based on full-time employment
    • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus
    • The possibility to work partly from home (hybrid working)
    • Solid pension scheme (ABP)
    • On campus child daycare, Sport facilities, Family support programs including: Dual career workshops, Dutch language class, tax & insurance workshop. (some might have additional costs)
    • Good paid parental leave scheme
    • International candidates may be eligible for a tax reduction (30% ruling)
    • Help and assistance with relocation (international candidates)

Open positions Climate change

  • Assistant/associate professor in past climate change

    An earth scientist who studies past climate change in order to understand implications of climate change for modern society, for example related to sea level rise.

  • Assistant/associate professor in atmospheric dynamics and composition (shared with IVM)

    An earth- or atmospheric scientist who studies contemporary climate change from an atmospheric perspective and studies the occurrence and role of for example drought or heatwaves and their impact on terrestrial processes such as carbon assimilation or wildfires via Earth system models (ideally EC-Earth) or big data analyses

  • Assistant/associate professor in contemporary carbon cycle processes

    An earth scientist who researches vulnerable carbon pools such as permafrost or peatlands to understand carbon-climate processes and mitigation potential.

    An earth scientist who studies longer term carbon fluxes in the Earth’s system, such as carbon sequestration by sediments or subduction related fluxes to ultimately understand carbon-climate processes on longer time scales.
