Amsterdam Institute for Life and Environment 

The new Amsterdam Institute for Life and Environment (A-LIFE) offers a stimulating international research environment with world-class academic reputation, and state-of-the-art facilities. We have a strong commitment to bachelor and master level teaching. Research in the department covers a wide range of fundamental and applied research topics with the aim to advance the fundamental understanding of the interplay between life and its environment. Our strength lies in the ability to connect properties and emergent behavior across all scales, from molecules to ecosystems, including human populations.

Teaching

Teaching will be embedded in the MSc programmes Chemistry (track Analytical Sciences), Ecology and Evolution, and Biomolecular Sciences as well as the BSc programmes Health and Life, Biomedical Sciences, Health Sciences, and Biology. 

Open positions Evolutionary adaptation in the Anthropocene

  • Assistant professor in molecular evolution

    An evolutionary biologist to apply experimental approaches to understand how species adapt to fast environmental changes, and what role genetic and phenotypic variation plays in the adaptation of species to anthropogenic habitats.

    An evolutionary biologist/genomic scientist to understand the effects of spatial heterogeneity in man-made landscapes on adaptation of species to anthropogenic habitats.

  • Assistant professor in evolutionary ecology

    An ecological or evolutionary scientist to understand the evolution of species interactions in novel man-made ecosystems such as cities or agricultural landscapes.

  • What are we offering?

    We offer positions (0.8 - 1.0 fte) as an assistant or associate professor depending on the departments. All positions are initially temporary with the prospect of a tenured position. The duration of the temporary contract can range from 1.5 years – 5 years depending on the circumstances and preferences. After a positive evaluation planned at 18 months, the position will be made permanent and you will be offered a personal career track with guidance, training and mentoring. 

    On full-time basis for Assistant Professor positions the remuneration  amounts to a minimum gross monthly salary of €3,974 (scale 11) and a maximum €6,181 (scale 12), depending on your education and experience. 

    Additionally, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam offers excellent fringe benefits and various schemes and regulations to promote a good work/life balance, such as:

    • a maximum of 41 days of annual leave based on full-time employment
    • 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% end-of-year bonus
    • The possibility to work partly from home (hybrid working)
    • Solid pension scheme (ABP)
    • On campus child daycare, Sport facilities, Family support programs including: Dual career workshops, Dutch language class, tax & insurance workshop. (some might have additional costs)
    • Good paid parental leave scheme
    • International candidates may be eligible for a tax reduction (30% ruling)
    • Help and assistance with relocation (international candidates)

  • Assistant professor in global change ecology

    An ecologist or ecological modeller to incorporate the traits-based approach into existing models of the System Earth, aiming to improve the prediction of the resilience of ecosystems.

    A health scientist with a focus on the impact of environmental exposures, such as pollution by human-made chemicals, during early life on human health and disease.
