Research Track Law

The Research Track (RT) is a selective programme aimed at motivated and talented masterstudents who want to further develop their analytical research skills. You will learn and experience how to do scientific research. This will help you in deciding whether you want to pursue a career in the academic world, and/or will improve your opportunities on the labour market outside academia.

The track (18 EC) is an extracurricular programme that consists of three courses: Empirical Research Skills RT (6 EC), Academic Research Skills RT (6 EC) and a Academic Writing Lab (6 EC). Every 3-4 weeks we will organize Research cafes, during which students will informally discuss each other’s work under supervision of experienced researchers. In addition, researchers will be invited to share their ups and downs with the process of doing research, and share their best practices.

When all components of the track have been completed successfully (i.e. completed with at least a 6.0 each), students will receive a certificate as well as a notification on their master’s degree diploma. Students will not receive a grade for the Research Track as a whole. The RT is extracurricular, which means that the ECs cannot be used as elective credit in the regular Master programmes.

Application and selection

The Research Track is open to students from the programmes LawTax LawNotary LawLaw and Politics of International Security, International Crimes, Conflict and Criminology, and International Business Law who are interested in scientific research.

The deadline for application is Friday, 15 November 2024, 13.00 h. To submit your application, you need to enroll in the Canvas course (course link: https://canvas.vu.nl/enroll/F9MEMG). On Canvas you can upload your CV, motivation letter (max. 350 words) and recent grade list, and (if applicable to you) also register for a selection interview. Interviews will take place between end-November and mid-December. If you have been admitted to the RT, you will start the Research Tack in January 2024.

If you have additional questions, please ask them via the RT Canvas page at the discussion forum.
