Art History

Our research encompasses the broad field of art history from the early modern period to the present - from drawings and prints to painting and installation, performance, sound and media art.

Each staff member has their own specific focus in terms of genres, mediums, theories or periods, but we share a number of underlying questions: for example, how art and visual culture are produced, presented, appropriated, and recontextualized in various media (from sketchbooks through exhibitions to digital platforms), and how new media have become subjects and materials of art practice. We also study canon formation and the functioning of the (global) art market, and we practice and reflect on art criticism.

We are active in the CLUE+ research cluster 'Paradigms of Creativity’ and work together closely with other universities and museums, galleries and auction houses, and with the artists themselves, both nationally and internationally.
