Personal information

Maarten Bolhuis is Assistant Professor of Criminology at the Faculty of Law, where he has worked since 2012. He is a graduate in criminology and political science at VU Amsterdam and the University of Amsterdam and obtained his PhD at VU Amsterdam in 2018. He was a visiting researcher at Roskilde University in 2025.

Maarten is Programme Coordinator of the MSc in International Crimes, Conflict & Criminology, Board member of the Amsterdam Young Academy, member of the Center for International Criminal Justice (CICJ), member of the Amsterdam Laboratory for Legal Psychology (ALLP), and co-chair of the International crimes and transitional justice division of the Dutch Society of Criminology (NVC).

Research

Maarten Bolhuis conducts research in the programme Empirical and normative studies. He has been involved in inter alia the following research projects:

In the In or out of control project, Maarten Bolhuis assesses the implications of citizenship revocation for the reintegration of terrorism convicts.
The Escaping Justice project focuses on the implications of the application of article 1F Refugee Convention, universal jurisdiction prosecutions of international crimes and extradition.
A more specific focus of this project is on the use of open-source information and other digital evidence in asylum procedures and in universal jurisdiction procedures.
The In Limbo project will culminate in the book 'Undesirable but Unremovable Migrants: War Criminals, Terrorists and Foreign Offenders in Limbo' (to be published by Routledge).
The JoinedUpJustice project (led by Prof. Elies van Sliedregt, Tilburg University) develops parameters for a coordinated system of global justice at the domestic level, focusing on international criminal law and international refugee law.
Together with researchers of the Asser Institute, Maarten Bolhuis conducted a research study into the feasibility of establishing an Investigative Taskforce on crimes against journalists.
