Joris van Wijk is professor Criminology of Conflict-related Crimes and Post-conflict Justice. He is a graduate in criminal law and criminology. In 2007 he published his PhD research Luanda-Holanda on irregular asylum migration from Angola to the Netherlands. He has been a visiting professional at the International Criminal Court (2011) and the Dutch Public Prosecution Service (2018), and a visiting scholar at Oslo University (2013), Melbourne University (2016) and Universidade Katyavala Bwila in Angola(2019).
Since 2021 Joris works part-time as a reserve for the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee. He is also an independent consultant for Hoopoe Migration Expertise.
Research
Joris' research interests lie at the crossroads of criminology, international criminal justice, terrorism, transitional justice and (irregular) (asylum) migration and the overlap between criminology and the military. He mainly applies a qualitative mixed methods approach. He is a fellow of the Center of International Criminal Justice (CICJ).
Teaching
Joris teaches the course Simulating Crime and Justice in VU's Honours programme. In the master programme International Crimes, Conflict and Criminology he teaches Expert Seminar and acts as Master Thesis Coordinator.
