The transition from study to work

Register disability
Last updated on 28 January 2025
Do you have a disability and are looking for work? Or do you have another support question regarding working with a disability?

If you are about to graduate or have just completed your degree, you may be making the transition to the job market. Sometimes you may need some extra support during this transition. You may face dilemmas such as: do I mention my disability when applying for a job or not? Or maybe you do not know how best to deal with your disability while working. Therefore, come to the workshop Transition to the labour market.

The transition from study to work

  • Labour market transition workshop

VU offers workshops for students with disabilities on the transition to employment. These workshops provide practical insights and tools for working with a disability. During the workshops you will learn:

    • About laws and regulations related to working with a disability.
    • Discover your talents.
    • How to present yourself on the job market.
    • What career opportunities there are for you.

The workshops will be given by the VU HR expert point Working with a Disability and the Infopunt Studying with a Disability. In 2025, the workshops are scheduled on Tuesdays, Feb. 25, March 4 and 11. For questions or registration, please contact the VU Participation Service Point.

  • Support from UWV, municipality and central government

    UWV and Municipality

Do you need help finding a job? UWV and municipalities offer guidance in applying for a job, such as help writing a resume and job training. You can also receive personal on-the-job support through a job coach. If you have benefits from the UWV (for example, Wajong), go to the UWV; otherwise, contact the municipality where you live.

    Central government

The central government has various (financial) schemes you can make use of if you have an occupational disability and want to work. Check the central government website for an overview of these schemes.

  • Supporting organisations

There are several organizations that can help you find a job. Consult the help guide on the Unimpeded Learning website for a list of these organizations.

  • Working at VU with an occupational disability

The VU has an expertise point for working at the VU with an occupational disability: the Service Point Participation. Do you have an employment limitation, are you registered in the target group register and are you interested in working at the VU? Then contact us at participatie.hrm@vu.nl. Also for questions about working with an occupational disability at other organizations, the target group register and facilities, please contact the Servicepunt Participatie VU.
