Re-enrolment

Go to Studielink
Last updated on 10 September 2024
In May, Studielink will automatically notify each student that they must re-enrol for the subsequent academic year.

You can find out below whether you need to re-enrol.

About re-enrolment

  • When can I re-enrol?

Re-enrolment for academic year 2024-2025 can take place between 6 May and 31 August.

  • Who needs to re-enrol?

Any student who wants to continue their studies beyond 31 August in the same way, must enrol for the new academic year. From 6 May onwards you can go to ‘arrange your re-enrolment’ in your To Do list in Studielink

    • If your programme includes a binding recommendation on continuation of studies, you can only re-enrol if you receive a positive recommendation.
    • If you will graduate this year and your graduation will be registered on time, you do not need to re-enrol. You can ignore the message from Studielink. Are you not sure your graduation wil be registered on time? Read the information below after 'Graduating in August'.
    • If you discontinue your studies, you do not need to re-enrol. You can ignore the message from Studielink.
    • You will only be enrolled if you also pay your tuition fees (or have authorised payment in instalments by digital direct debit) before 1 September! Please note: if you have opted for payment by digital authorisation, the authorization expires at the end of each academic year. Be sure to re-submit your payment method each new academic year.

    New enrolment

The following situations do not involve re-enrolment, but a new enrolment

    • You were not studying during the previous academic year.
    • You studied during the previous academic year, but you interrupted your studies.
    • You will begin a new study programme or you will change the form of your studies (for example, you change from a Bachelor’s to a Master’s programme).
    • The name of your programme changes.

Please note: your application will only be converted into an actual enrolment if you also pay the tuition fee before the deadline of 1 September (giving digital direct debit authorisation is also considered payment).

  • How do I arrange my re-enrolment?

Log in to Studielink and choose ‘Re-enrol for next year’ from your ‘To Do list’. This is possible between 6 May and 31 August. Your enrolment is only complete when you have also paid the tuition fee or have given digital direct debit authorisation for it no later than 31 August.

    Status overview

In the status overview in your personal dashboard on VU.nl you will see which requirements you still have to meet to be fully enrolled. Your (re-)enrolment is complete when your status in Studielink under ‘My study programmes’ is ‘enrolled’. Changes made in your application in Studielink or in your dashboard will be visible within 24 hours.

Where can you find the Status Overview of your enrolment?

    1. Go to your personal dashboard and choose the relevant course via 'Complete Registration'.
    2. Under ‘Status’, click ‘Check status’.
    3. For each requirement you can see whether or not you are expected to take action.
  • Graduating in August

If your last grade of an exam or thesis was registered before 31 August, you can still graduate in August, but the administrative process will probably be completed in September.

    Re-enrolment and tuition fees

If your graduation date is still in August after processing, you can cancel your re-enrolment and you will not have to pay tuition fees for September. If your graduation date unexpectedly falls in September (for example because your last grade was registered after 31 August), you can deregister after your graduation has been processed. You will then only pay tuition fees for that month.

Not sure whether you will graduate for your Bachelor's degree this summer?

If you are not certain whether you will graduate for your Bachelor's degree before 1 September, we advise you to re-enrol for this Bachelor’s degree programme in Studielink and at the same time submit a new enrolment application for the Master’s degree programme that you want to follow after the bachelor.

    • If you graduate for your Bachelor's degree on time, you can cancel your Bachelor's re-enrolment in Studielink and you will be on time with your Master's application.
    • If you do not graduate for your Bachelor's degree on time, your Master's application will be declined and you are still on time with your Bachelor's re-enrolment.
  • Binding recommendation on continuation of studies (BSA)

    • You can only re-enrol after the first year of your Bachelor’s programme if you have received a positive BSA.
    • Your BSA will be issued in July or August. Of course, this only applies to Bachelor's degree programmes that issue BSA's.
    • However, you can begin the process of re-enrolment before this time: if you receive a negative BSA, you will still have until 31 August to cancel your enrolment.
  • Re-enrolment for students of a joint degree or cooperative programme

You may also take courses at another university as part of your programme and be fully enrolled or enrolled as a secondary subject student at the other institution. VU Amsterdam offers a number of programmes in cooperation with other universities in this way. After you are fully re-enrolled at VU, you will automatically be enrolled at the other programme. It depends on the study programme whether you receive a full enrolment or an enrolment as a secondary subject student at the partner university.

  • Late re-enrolment

    Late re-enrolment is not possible.

If you fail to arrange your re-enrolment or fail to pay your tuition fees before 1 September, it is no longer possible to re-enrol. If your programme has no additional start date later in the year, you will have to wait until the subsequent academic year before you can continue with your programme. On the Master's application page you can find which Master's degree programmes have an additional start date.
