What was the main goal of your project?
The primary goal was to use the Quality Funds to create a high-quality video studio where lecturers, with the support of video specialists, can produce knowledge clips. This enhances the quality of education and relieves some of the burden on lecturers. Additionally, AV resources in teaching spaces were standardised to a Basic+ level, enabling lecturers to easily and flexibly engage in blended and hybrid education. Without complex processes, they can record sessions, with subtitles generated automatically, and the controls in every room are simple and uniform.
What concrete results have you achieved with your project?
Our AVC team has established an accessible and versatile video studio. With the upgrades we implemented: such as a green screen surround, acoustic materials for sound isolation, fixed and flexible lighting, and various adaptable setups. The studio can be used for a wide range of purposes. These include live events, high-quality knowledge clips, customised productions, and more. This allows lecturers and academic programmes to create tailored video content to meet their specific needs.
What did you personally find the most beautiful or special moment during this project?
A highlight for our team was the visit from a focus group that came to test the video studio and were pleasantly surprised by the possibilities and quality. Additionally, we were excited to be able to equip the teaching spaces with controllable cameras and microphones within the given budget. This has made it easier and more flexible to deliver hybrid/online education.
How has this project contributed to the improvement of education at VU Amsterdam?
Thanks to this project, we’ve been able to elevate education at VU Amsterdam on multiple fronts. From pre-recorded knowledge clips with support, to providing audiovisual tools that lecturers can independently use for (online) teaching, every lecturer now has access to the upgraded AV resources. The new equipment has also made education future-proof, ensuring that VU Amsterdam is ready for innovative, inclusive, and accessible forms of education.
Upgrading Recording Studio
As part of the 2023-2028 Education Agenda, the VU Education Quality Plan has been developed. This quality plan aligns with the nationally established themes in the quality agreements and was created in close consultation with the participation council. Several projects have emerged from this quality plan, including this project: Upgrading Recording Studio. We interview project leader Andy Swarts.
