Eliana Martinez, Accounting Supervisor

alumnus Certified Management Accountant

Eliana Martinez (1988) currently works as an Accounting Supervisor. She graduated as a Certified Public Accountant in her home country of Argentina. She worked there in different roles, including financial accountant, tax consultant and in audit. In 2014 she decided to move to the Netherlands and pursue a master's degree in Accounting and Control at VU Amsterdam. Since then she has enjoyed living in the Netherlands. In 2020 she enrolled in the Certified Management Accountant programme at VU Amsterdam. This programme provides thorough preparation for the internationally renowned CMA exams, a globally recognized certification offered by the Institute of Management Accountants. The US-based Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), has recently recognized the CMA Programme as IMA's Platinum Approved CMA Course Provider.

Why did you choose this programme?
I decided to pursue the CMA programme when I first looked at the content of the programme. CMA offered me a certification with the perfect blend of skills and knowledge that a financial professional should have. I am convinced that this certification will help me reach the next level in my career.
The CMA programme covers many relevant areas, including "Technology and Analysis." A subject that is really a hot topic. The financial world is changing quite rapidly, not only in the way of working and the existing regulations, but also in terms of the technologies used. Financial professionals need to be continuously up-to-date and have the competence to meet the current requirements of companies.
Moreover, the CMA certification not only allowed me to prove and improve my capabilities, but also gave me continuous access to webinars and trainings on relevant topics of today (by being an IMA member).

Before you enrolled in the CMA programme, you had already completed the Master's in Accounting and Control at VU Amsterdam. How did the two programmes fit together?
My whole master's experience at VU Amsterdam was great. I was very happy with the courses and professors. When I came across the CMA programme, I was happy that VU Amsterdam offered it as one of their postgraduate courses. During my master's, one of the courses was Management Accounting, which gave me a perfect starting point for my CMA studies. From a financial reporting perspective, IFRS is also an important topic in the master's. Although CMA focuses on US GAAP, I am glad that I have a good understanding of both sets of standards, as it is strongly required in my current job. I think these two programmes complement each other very well.

How do you look back on the programme?
Both the lectures and the study cases were very engaging and connected well with my daily work. The group was the right size and we all could participate and ask questions. Many interesting opinions and experiences were discussed at each meeting. The fact that I could interact with other professionals was a big plus. In addition, the material provided during the lectures was easy to follow and most importantly, up-to-date.
Although preparing for the exam was time-consuming, especially with a full-time job, I enjoyed it for many reasons: the atmosphere during the lectures, the practical cases and the people I met. The icing on the cake was to pass both exams.

What were particular aspects of the programme?
I started the CMA programme in January 2020, just before the pandemic began. Even though it was an uncertain time, the lectures continued. I appreciate all the effort the VU Amsterdam staff put in to make this possible. Another important aspect was the opportunity to interact with many lecturers who are experts in their fields. Finally, this certification helped me build my confidence in myself.
