Globalisation and digitisation bring the world closer. Does that enhance our sense of belonging? Or does it increase our need to express our own identities and connect with likeminded people? Is the gap widening between people who do and do not have access to certain networks? Levels of connection abound: past–present, machines–people, online–offline, local–global … At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, researchers explore the many facets of a world that seems increasingly connected. From privacy, virtual reality and information bubbles to historical linguistic influences, heritage and artificial intelligence—not to mention the psychological aspects of always being switched on.
