Morphological Analysis of the Syrohexaplaric Psalter

This research project aims at the morphological encoding of the Syrohexaplaric version of the Psalms.

The Syrohexapla is the famous Syriac translation of the Greek version of the Old Testament, created in the early seventh century. As a rigid mirror translation, it provides valuable insights into the Greek version it reflects. In recent research by members of the Eep Talstra Centre for Bible and Computer the focus on text-historical questions is complemented by attention to linguistic and literary aspects, such as the applicability of translation universals, the use of Greek loan words, and poetic devices.

This project is part of the Göttingen project Editio critica maior of the Greek Psalter. It incorporates textual corrections by Piotr Jutkiewicz. The morphological encoding builds upon AI models produced within the project Morphological Parser for Inflectional Languages Using Deep Learning. The AI-generated encodings are manually revised by Matthias Benadellah and Logan Copley, utilizing Qoroyo, a tool developed by Yusuf Çelik.

Thanks to the efforts of Matthias Benadellah, the project is expanding to include the Syro-hexaplaric version of Ben Sira.
