Call for internship opportunities

Our master programmes in life sciences hope to connect our researchers in-training with external organisations and companies, where their potential can flourish. If your research group, start up, or company has a challenging research project for our students, register your interest to take on a new intern.

Students in our research master programmes acquire a diverse set of skills and training so they can contribute to your life sciences research projects. As part of their master curriculum every student participates in full-time research internships where they experience all aspects of the research cycle.

We are accustomed to our students working off campus. We have protocols in place to maintain research confidentiality and our own VU academic staff support you and co-supervise the student throughout this process, from the paperwork to grading the final report.

Browse our research study programmes below for more details on the specialisations and submit a project description.

  • Biomedical Sciences

Biomedical Sciences focuses on the biology of human health and disease.

Our students are trained to work in an interdisciplinary manner with various expertise, depending on their interests and backgrounds. In this master’s programme, our students follow advanced course work and look for internships in the following research specialisations:

    • Immunology
    • Neurobiology
    • Infectious Diseases

    Internship requirements:

    • The research topic should be in the domain of Biomedical Sciences and contribute to a student’s training in their chosen research specialisation
    • The student should learn to independently conduct scientific research
    • The internship should last 5-6 months (20 - 24 weeks), usually takes place between February and June
    • The on-site supervisor of the placement organisation is required to have a PhD degree, and hold a research  position.
    • Students submit a final report in thesis format, grading will be carried out by VU academic staff in conversation with the on-site supervisor

  • Biomolecular Sciences

Biomolecular Sciences studies the molecular mechanisms behind biology.  Students have the freedom to develop their research interests and learn from a broad selection of advanced biological courses. In this master’s programme, our students look for internships with a biomolecular angle.

    Internship requirements:

    • The research topic should be in the domain of Biomolecular Sciences.
    • The student should learn to independently conduct scientific research
    • The lab internship should last 5-6 months (20 - 24 weeks).
    • Bioinformatics analysis projects of 4 months duration are also welcome
    • The on-site supervisor of the placement is required to have a PhD degree, and hold a research position.
    • Students submit a final report in thesis format, grading will be carried out by VU academic staff in conversation with the on-site supervisor

  • Neurosciences

Our Neurosciences master’s programme focuses on training interdisciplinary researchers in brain function and dysfunction.  Our highly selective program trains its students in the basics - from genes to behaviours, from molecule to mind. In second year, students further specialise in fundamental or translational neurosciences, learning advanced research techniques.

    Internship Requirements:

    • The research topic should be in the domains of fundamental, cognitive or clinical neurosciences
    • The student should learn to independently conduct scientific research
    • The internship should last 5 - 6 months (20 - 24 weeks) and usually takes place between February and June.
    • The on-site supervisor of the placement is required to have a PhD degree, and hold a research position.
    • Students submit a final report in manuscript format, grading will be carried out by VU academic staff in conversation with the on-site supervisor
