Cybersave Yourself: start campaign on information security

1 September 2022
Starting in the new academic year, a (SURF) campaign will start to raise awareness of information security among staff and students.

The IT department does everything it can to protect the VU community from cybercrime, but when it comes to maintaining our defences the university’s employees are the vital link. How well informed are our employees when it comes to information security, and do they act accordingly? You can bolt the door as often as you want, but if someone accidentally leaves a window open, cybercriminals will find a way in. And you may not even notice a thing.

Themes
This academic year we are therefore giving extra attention to awareness around information security so that we can better guarantee the safety of our university, but also of employees and students in the future. At the same time, we hope to change the behaviour of employees and students for the better. This month we will kick off the campaign. After that, we will highlight a different theme each time: from password use and data storage to phishing and account sharing.

Training session
In the run-up to this campaign, we offered a training session on privacy and security. This session is not about memorizing rules and protocols, but about developing a working method that enables you to handle information as securely as possible. This 45-minute training session covers the core principles of VU Amsterdam’s information security policy:

  • Sticking to the IT resources provided by your employer when doing your job
  • Always knowing who you are dealing with
  • Working securely and reliably at all times and in all locations
  • Only permitting the right people to access the right data
  • Helping each other achieve the right mindset and way of working

You can find the training session for employees and students on Canvas. Log in with your VUnet ID. Are you a strong link or weak link when it comes to information security?
