CSL involves three components: academic content from teachers and students, relevant service through collaboration with societal partners, and reflection to connect theory with practice.
The added value of CSL includes benefits for societal partners, teachers, and students. Partners can gain from the outcomes and student contributions, teachers experience personal and professional growth, and students enhance their critical thinking, problem-solving, interpersonal, and cultural understanding.
For effective implementation of CSL, we highlight three lessons:
- First, choose the right format, considering students' prior experience and course objectives.
- Second, connect with societal partners early, ideally three months in advance, to manage expectations and roles.
- Lastly, develop a reflection and evaluation strategy that aligns with course objectives, is structured, and involves all stakeholders in evaluating both the product and the process.
