Preparing a training and guidance plan for PhD Students

Last updated on 17 December 2025
The employer shall ensure that, after consultation with the PhD student and the designated supervisor or supervising professor, a customized training and guidance plan will be drawn up, and that this plan will be presented to the student within three months of commencement of employment.
  1. Near the end of the first year, the training and guidance plan will be customized further for the remainder of the contract, and it may be adjusted from year to year.
  2. The training and guidance plan will include the following:
    • the knowledge and skills that the student should acquire, and how this should take place;
    • the PhD student’s supervisor (i.e. the person under whose supervision the PhD student is working) and the supervising professor. If the supervising professor is not also the supervisor, then it has been stipulated that the PhD student will discuss the research project with the supervising professor at the commencement of the research project and at moments that are crucial for the progress of the project, but in any case at least once per year;
    • The number of hours of personal supervision per month to which the PhD student is entitled from the designated supervisor.
    • an agreement on the PhD student’s educational commitment that does not exceed 20% of employment on average over 4 years. This agreement does not apply to the combined position of lecturer and PhD student.
