Start working in Pure
Last updated on 3 October 2023
The VU Research Portal is a powerful tool that helps you manage and showcase your research. The VU Research Portal offers an overview of all research recorded in PURE by VU Amsterdam researchers. For both academics and other interested parties, this information is quickly and easily accessible thanks to an advanced search function.

  • Working with the VU Research Portal and PURE

    Personal Pages
The personal pages in the VU Research Portal gives you a chance to present yourself to the public. You are in full control of your own page and how to choose to  promote your research. Personal pages consist of the following sections: personal overview, research output and network. You can find instructions on how to manage these personal pages at 'Managing your VU personal page in PURE'.

    Registering output
PURE is also an instrument that can be used to register research output. A simple and user-friendly way for academic researchers to keep track of research output. You can use online sources such as Scopus and Web of Science in the process of registering output. You can find instructions on how to register research output at 'Registration of research output in PURE'.

    Reporting
The VU Research Portal also ensures that VU Amsterdam can justify the use of funds to various organizations. The PURE administrators take care of these annual reports.
The VU Research Portal enables PURE administrators to create different reports for  justification to various external organizations.

    Accounts
Every internal and external VU employee registered within HRM as a researcher is automatically provided with a PURE account. If you are not a researcher but would like to get a PURE account, please contact the faculty PURE administrator, see Contact and support.

    Logging in
Everyone who has an account can log in using their own VUnetID and password. In the event that you are already logged in to VUnet, you will not be required to log in to PURE separately thanks to single sign on. At the bottom of the VU Research Portal you can find a ‘log in to PURE’ link. You log in by clicking on this link.

  • Managing your VU personal page in PURE

Read all about this topic in the LibGuide Manage your personal profile in Pure

    On a more general note...

Every personal VU page contains these topics:

    General information
You will first see fields for general information. This includes the name of the researcher, their e-mail address and a picture. You can add information with for example a phone number, address and a room number. It is also possible to include links to LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook and other personal or research-related web pages such as a Scopus profile, Mandley, Research Gate, Google Scholar, etc.

    Personal profile
Under Personal Information, please give a profile description of yourself (not only what your academic function is, but also your substantive function, i.e. what your expertise is). You can supplement various subjects, such as research, teaching and education. Above all, let us know what you are currently researching. There may be faculty guidelines, check with the faculty policy officer research or get advice from the faculty communication officers. And especially make use of the option to add keywords.

    Organizational affiliations
These consist of the HR appointment (faculty and department), research programmes and research institutes. The HR position is recorded in the HR system and any changes are automatically sent to PURE.
Research programmes are registered in two places. The programmes that receive indirect or commercial funding are recorded in the project system and are managed by project controllers. For any changes to programme names, please contact the project controller in charge of the project. The programmes that receive direct funding are recorded in the PURE system and are managed by faculty PURE administrators. Research institutes are registered in PURE and are managed by faculty PURE administrators.

    Ancillary activities
This part is automatically imported from the ancillary activities that are registered in the HRM system. This information can be adjusted by going to the VU Service Portal: Ancillary activities.

    Managing personal pages
After logging in, the personal overview page is shown. This page includes all personal data and all registered research output. Using the ‘edit profile’ button, you can add personal information such as various IDs (Scopus, Web of Science and ORCiD), a profile picture, files and links.

You can also add profile information under Curriculum and give a research description. Using the ‘add profile information’ button, it is possible to manually add text and hyperlinks for predefined topics.

The default settings show all research output on all personal pages. You may prefer to have a more limited selection on your personal page. You can do this by creating a Highlighted Content CV. For more information, please read “Creating a Curriculum Vitae in PURE”.

  • Registration of research output in PURE

Read all about this topic in the LibGuide Manage your publications in Pure

    On a more general note...

    Research output types
It is possible to register various research output types in PURE. Examples of types include: a contribution to a journal, a chapter in a book/report/conference proceeding and a contribution to a conference.

    Manual registrations
Manually registering research output is made easy by selecting a type first. This selection only requires information necessary for this particular type. After you save the registration, it is added to the list with research output and becomes visible on the personal page. It is also submitted to the PURE administrator for validation.

Registration using online sources Scopus and Web of Science
The researcher can be assisted in the registration process by using online sources such as Scopus and Web of Science. You can search for research output in a number of ways, using a name, various IDs (Scopus, Web of Science and ORCiD), and keywords.

Setting up automatic searches for new research output
PURE offers the option of setting up automatic sources for new research output in online sources such as Scopus and Web of Science. Use the settings in your personal profile to create automatic searches. You have the option of sending an e-mail notifications when new research output is found.

    Full text files
During the research output registration process, it is possible to add a full text file (for example a PDF file) to your publication. This becomes visible in the VU Research Portal to other researchers, colleagues and interested parties after it has been uploaded.

Importing research output from other sources
Importing research output from other sources is possible. RIS-/bibtex-/CERIF formats are supported for import. Go to ‘add new research output’ and select ‘import from file’.

    Research output and embargo
It is possible to add an embargo date to research output. After this date the research output will automatically be visible on the VU Research Portal.

  • Creating a Curriculum Vitae in PURE

It is easy to create a Curriculum Vitae by following a number of simple steps. These steps include selecting a private, public or Highlighted Content CV. All the information that is registered in PURE can be selected and is included in a CV format.

    Public and private CVs
In both the public and private CVs any changes you want can be made. The private CV can then be saved as a PDF or word file. The public CV can be published and downloaded as a PDF.

    Highlighted Content CV
A Highlighted Content CV shows a selection of the research output and activities on the personal page. The order of the selected items can be adjusted, after which the CV can be published. This replaces the sections where items have been selected.

  • Tips for researchers

Please find below some tips to optimize PURE for your personal profiling as a researcher.

    Personal information

    • Upload a professional picture
    • Add personal information using the paragraph “Overview” like a short introduction, your fields of research, your educational activities and other items you would like to mention
    • Add links below your picture to other personal pages on social media like LinkedIn, FB, Twitter, Mendeley, Google Scholar, Scopus, Research Gate etc.

    Completing and showing research output

    • To start: add aliases/name variants to your PURE account (first letter, first name, last name)
    • To start: add researchers ID’s to your personal profile (ORCiD, Scopus, Web of Science)
    • To start importing publications from online data sources: first activate your alert for identifying and then importing new research output from Scopus (preferred source) or Web of Science.
    • Register publications prior to your VU-affiliation (Use your PURE account, go to “Research Output” and use the option “Import from File”).
    • Making visible your selected research output: use the module “curriculum vitae” in your PURE account  and use the option “Highlighted content” to determine which research output is visible on your personal profile page in PURE.

    Good to know

    • To change your ancillary activities: please use E-HRM on VUnet. These changes will become visible overnight.
    • For now, indirectly or commercially funded projects can only be changed or added through your faculty project controller.
    • Content on your former personal page on VU.nl will not be visible anymore, but is not lost after May 8th. It is still available in Tridion. The person that is responsible for updating your personal page in Tridion can access this information for you so you can transfer this content to PURE.
  • Contact and support

Organization surrounding research and the use of PURE

Every faculty has their own policies on the organization of research activities. This includes research policy, designed and implemented by the portfolio holder for research and policy officers. PURE is also used for registration purposes. For any questions or support, you can get in touch with a number of PURE administrators. And lastly, academics have access to the VU research portal where they can present themselves and their research. The faculty board, the portfolio holders of research, the research policy officers and PURE administrators are all involved in this.

Every faculty has contact persons who can offer support in the use of PURE. You can find them all in the Pure Libguides.

    Resources

There are resources available to support researchers using PURE. One of those resources is this information page. Help text and mouse overs offer support while using PURE. You can also consult PURE manuals and screencasts. Once you log in, you can find these in the bottom right corner.

There are also help files and mouse overs available when you record the categorization of duties (scheduled FTEs) in e-HRM. There are also faculty guidelines available in registering this categorization of duties. For up-to-date guidelines, please get in touch with the portfolio holder for research or the research policy officer.
