Inclusive Workplaces

Last updated on 24 March 2025
At Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, we believe that diversity and inclusion are fundamental to our identity and success. Our goal is to create an inclusive workplace where every employee feels valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.

The Inclusive Workplaces Project is designed to establish a coherent diversity and inclusion strategy that aligns with the needs of faculties and departments while fostering a culture of belonging across the university. To ensure our strategy and tools are relevant and effective, employees can share their experiences, needs, and ideas in roundtable discussions. Your input is crucial to the success of this project!

What is the Inclusive Workplaces Project?

The Inclusive Workplaces project is an initiative by the Diversity Office of VU Amsterdam aimed at developing and implementing a structured approach to diversity and inclusion (D&I). Through extensive research and collaboration with employees, we seek to:

  • Develop a coherent strategy for inclusive workplaces at VU Amsterdam.
  • Provide a centralized toolbox with accessible interventions that support inclusion at all levels.
  • Implement soft accountability measures and continuous monitoring to track progress and ensure effectiveness.

By leveraging best practices and existing VU initiatives, this project will provide employees with the tools and knowledge needed to foster an inclusive working environment.

Benefits for employees

The project Inclusive Workplaces at VU, part of the Colourful Staff Action Plan, ensures diversity is not only brought into the organization but also retained and promoted. Employees may notice this through:

  • Clear and centralized information on initiatives related to inclusion
  • Easy access to tools and resources in a centralized toolbox
  • Improved communication and collaboration in teams
  • Inclusion in team decision-making
  • Enhanced career opportunities
  • Increasing inclusion awareness and engagement
