As a manager, you have more impact on wellbeing and effectiveness than some realize. Not just in strategic choices, but also importantly in creating a healthy and safe working environment.
VU Amsterdam wants you as a manager to be well-equipped to manage and motivate your employees in an open, personal and responsible way. Develop the knowledge, insight and skills you need for this in the management training programmes that VU Amsterdam offers for all management levels.
Leadership and management
Leadership and management are often used as synonyms.
- With management, we mean your hierarchical responsibility for directing your colleagues.
- Leadership is the individual responsibility we all have to contribute proactively to smooth collaboration, in order to realise the ambitions of VU Amsterdam. The principles of Art of Engagement reflect this leadership. It is important that we keep practicing our ability to reflect and involve multiple perspectives.
As a manager, you have an exemplary role in leadership, it is not an effortless thing. It is helpful when you make clear that you value collaborating according to the principles of Art of Engagement, strive to act in this way and reflect on your behaviour if things did not go as intended. Organise your own feedback regularly and make it a natural and familiar part of working together.
What are you responsible for
The Management framework tells you what we expect from you as a manager. Based on your responsibility for the four task areas People Management, Financial Management, Process Management and Strategic Management, you are the embodiment of integrated management skills. This does not mean that you always have to do everything yourself; but you do bear overall responsibility. Responsibilities are obviously different for each management level, so discuss with your manager and HR Advisor at what level your management takes place.
You can find more about practical rules, locations and protocols for management via the HR Guidance for managers.
