The content of the course will therefore mainly be focused on ‘student engagement’ and ‘active learning’. Using educational literature discussed in the course, participants will develop a personal learning objective (e.g. create a safe learning environment, share mutual expectations with students, specific interventions to stimulate the engagement of students).
After completing this course, participants will be able to apply effective strategies to increase student engagement during activating small-group teaching.
There is one specific entry requirement. Since you will create a personal learning objective which you will ‘do something with’ in your teaching practice to experience its effect and contribute to your growth, you will need to be teaching during the course. Without an opportunity to practice and experience the impact of your learning objective, the course will have less value for you.
No formal exam or other assessment involved. If desired, a certificate of participation, including the course load and content, can be provided.
The teacher is Jan Willem Grijpma. He has done a PhD on optimizing student engagement in small-group active learning. His purpose for facilitating this course is to broaden the impact of the research work by enabling teachers to reap the benefits of it.
