Entry requirements

Who can join?

This course is taught at master's level but also open to PhD students across all disciplines in quantitative social sciences. These include business, criminology, economics, econometrics, education, environmental sciences, finance, health sciences, international studies, psychology, public policy, political science, social policy, sociology, and statistics, all broadly defined. 

Participating students are expected to have prior knowledge of regression analysis and hypothesis testing. If you do not have this knowledge, you can still participate in this course by additionally following the VU Amsterdam Summer School course Data Analysis in R in a previous session. Prior coding experience specifically in R is preferred but is not a prerequisite of the course.

All students must bring their own laptops to the course. Laptop should be capable of running R Studio.

How to apply

  • Applying and paying via our form

    Applying to VU Amsterdam Summer School is as easy as clicking the blue 'Apply now' button at the top of any page of your chosen course and filling in our online application form

    Before we can finalise your application, payment must be made. After you complete the application form you will be taken to a secure payment page. We accept most major credit cards.

    Required documents

    In the application form you will be asked to provide the following two documents (no larger than 1 MB per document):

    • Curriculum Vitae/Résumé (mostly important for us to understand your educational background)
    • Transcript of records (a print screen of your most recent grades is sufficient and needs to include your name and the name of your university)

    These documents will be shared with the professors before the start of the course.

  • Applying via invoice

    Under some circumstances we allow payments via invoice. To apply and pay by invoice, please contact us first at amsterdamsummerschool@vu.nl

    Applications completed before midnight on 31 March receive a €50 early bird discount. This is automatically deducted from your total when completing the application form.

  • Short-stay accommodation

    We offer different short-stay accommodation options for summer school students in different parts of Amsterdam. Rooms are limited and allocation is not guaranteed, so we must work with a first-pay, first-serve system.
