Workshop Strategy Management Dynamics

Gain insight into hidden dynamics, design integrated strategies and make smarter decisions using systemic thinking and simulation models.

What will you gain from this programme?

Participants will develop the ability to:

  • Identify the invisible dynamics that affect the performance of the organization;
  • Understand why fixing one problem often creates three new ones (and how to break that vicious cycle)
  • Recognize which delays matter and which ones don’t
  • Understand the dynamics behind the common strategies
  • Understand and map their own strategic architecture
  • Design integrated strategies that solve problems
  • Develop the ability to use simulation models to help your decisions

Learning objectives

By the end of the programme, participants will:

  • Identify dysfunctional dynamics that pressure the organization;
  • Understand how interventions in one area often mean unintended problems in other areas and how to avoid that problem;
  • Understand the importance of the different delays in the existing business processes;
  • Understand how the different areas integrate to for the strategic architecture of the organization;
  • Design integrated strategies to improve performance; Develop the ability to think systemically, dynamically and responsibly in the decision-making process.

Literature

Participants will engage with academic literature from:

  • Project Management
  • System Dynamics applied to project and service management
  • Marketing: Value Co-creation, Motives to Co-create, and Social Capital

Assessment and Completion

This programme does not include formal grading. Participants receive a certificate of completion based on active participation and engagement in simulation exercises and discussions.

Jorge Sousa

Jorge Sousa

Jorge Sousa recently submitted his PhD on project management dynamics and simulation modelling, with six papers currently under review in leading academic journals.

With 25+ years leading complex international programs across Africa, Europe, and the Middle East, Jorge bridges academic research with executive practice. As CEO of Whatxnext (winner of the 2025 H2O Sustainability Summit) he applies system dynamics simulation to sustainability, port management, and regenerative business strategies.

Jorge collaborates with the Regenerative Business Leaders Initiative with VU Amsterdam and collaborates with leading scholars in System Dynamics, bringing real-world complexity into academic research and translating academic insights into business impact.

The programme is delivered in three interactive sessions:

  • Session 1 – Foundations of Strategic Dynamics: Resources, Performance, and Methodologies

    This opening session provides senior leaders with a concise, high-level introduction to the core mechanisms that shape strategic performance. Participants examine the strengths and limitations of common strategy methodologies and explore how organisational performance evolves over time. Through the lens of the Resource-Based View, the session highlights how resource stocks, resource quality, and the rates at which resources are gained or lost underpin long-term strategic outcomes. The focus is on building a clear conceptual foundation for understanding dynamic strategy behavior.

  • Session 2 – Strategic Architecture, Capabilities, and Resource Development

    This session introduces strategic architecture as an integrated system linking resources, capabilities, and decision structures. Participants examine how tangible and intangible resources interact to shape competitive advantage, and how capabilities emerge, strengthen, or erode over time. The session also explores resource development paths and capability-building processes, enabling leaders to recognise the structural foundations required to support and sustain strategic intent in complex environments.

  • Session 3 – Steering Strategy, Growth Dynamics, and Organizational Performance

    In the final session, participants analyze the mechanisms through which leaders steer strategic outcomes. The session explores the dynamics of growth, capacity, and scaling, revealing how strategic decisions propagate through the organization and affect performance over time. Participants learn to identify leverage points for sustainable growth, anticipate unintended effects of strategic choices, and design more resilient strategies. The program concludes with a reflective discussion linking insights from all sessions to participants’ organizational contexts.
